These statues were brought back from theCongo in the early 1970’s. They were sculpted by the Luba, an ethnic group fromthe south of the country. They represent a man and a woman sitting onstools and dressed with traditional headdresses. The characters are similar in every way, but differ in their gender characteristics, it was a way for the artist toevoke a complementary relationship between two distinct representations. They are represented according to the codesof Luba tribal art, with thin symmetrical lines drawing their faces, slenderlimbs, and short, stubby legs. They have one hand on their navel and oneon their back. Beyond the symbolic aspect of the gesture, this posture is aboveall due to aesthetic considerations, it is a way to balance the forms and tospace the limbs. Both objects are over 5 decades old, butthey have been very well preserved and are in excellent condition. 35 x 10 x 9 cm. The objects will be completely padded withbubble wrap before being placed in a sturdy cardboard box and caulked withpolystyrene.
